The poster below shows number placement into the Quintillions. Notice that every set of three number clusters that are sectioned, spoken, and set aside with commas are in groups spoken of as hundreds. This makes large numbers easier to read and understand. Although numbers are written and said aloud from left to right, a person must begin looking at the number from right to left to determine how many clusters of three numbers there are. The first cluster of three or the hundreds is to the left of the decimal point. If there isn't any decimal point written, then it is the first cluster of three numbers on the right hand side of the group. Example: 183 is said as one hundred eighty three. In the poster below it is 701 or seven hundred and one or seven hundred one. Decimals are said as "point". So 183.4 is said as one hundred eighty three point four or one hundred eighty three and four tenths. The th's numbers are on the right of the decimal point.

.1 equals 1 tenth .01 equals 1 hundredth .001 equals 1 thousandth .0001 equals 1 ten thousandth and so on. (The next is hundred thousandths.) .1 is one whole thing divided into ten pieces and you have one of those pieces. If the number is .3 you have three of those ten pieces or 3/10 written as a fraction then 3 out of 10 pieces are present. Money is said as hundredths because we have 100 pennies or cents in every dollar. So, $5.10 is actually five whole dollars and one tenth of another one or five dollars and ten cents. If we had $5.25 then we would say five dollars and twenty-five cents. .063 is said as 63 thousandths. What this means is that a whole thing (and it might be inches) has been split up into a thousand parts and you have 63 of them. If you had .431, you would say: I have four hundred thirty-one thousandths.
